White Wash Dresser That s Not Real Wood

Hello amazing friends! I have a brand new makeover to share today! 😀

Jack had decided that he wanted to pick out a piece of furniture to work on to make a little money, so we stopped by the thrift store closest to my house a few days ago and all furniture was 50% off. That never happens, but they were overstocked so it was our lucky day.

The first piece with potential I spied was this sofa table:

Jack wasn't interested in it, so I nabbed it for myself. It was marked $34, so we got it for $17, not too bad considering it is solid wood and was in great shape aside from a serious scratch on the top. I've included a few affiliate links so you can find the products I use.

When I was deciding what I wanted to do with this table, I kept thinking about this child's desk makeover, and how I loved how the top of it turned out. So, I decided to do the same for this sofa table, and white wash the top:

I love the breezy coastal feel this treatment gave this table.

And it was simple to do! I started by sanding the top down to the bare wood with my rotary sander:

After removing all the dust, I pulled out this packet of driftwood stain that was in a goodie bag from one of the blogging conferences I attended. (You can find it HERE.)

I used half of it when I did the child's desk. It lasts for three months, but that meant it had expired in February…oopsie. So I mixed the other half, vowing I would not let the remainder go to waste this time. (Just mix the powder with water.)

I applied it to the table top with an old rag and it turned this awful shade of gray:

I expected that however since I'd been down this road before. When it happened to the desk I used it on, I did not like it at all either and so I had to come up with a plan B.

I brushed on white latex paint that I had watered down just a tiny bit, then quickly wiped it off with a clean cloth, making sure to go all the way across with the grain of the wood. Then I went back with a new rag dipped in water and diluted the white-washed look further until it was blended just how I wanted it.

UPDATE : Here is a more recent piece I did a similar finish on using Dixie Belle products:

I found this to be easier! See that post HERE.

I also used the same Dixie Belle products on this piece:

I love the results.

It was hard to get a head-on shot since my big ole island was in the way. This is the best I could do…

I'll be back on Tuesday with my Trash-to-Treasure girls sharing another new makeover that Jack and I teamed up on, this French Provincial bedside table:

Hope y'all have  a great weekend!
